Style Savvy: Styling Star is the fourth and most recent game installment in the Style Savvy series. It was released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2017.

Styling Star is a fashion-simulation game with a focus on styling customers as they aspire to fame.

Story[]

Upon moving to a new city, the player meets up with their Uncle Tim, who reveals that their purpose for being there is to inherit his boutique and, afterwards, he promptly leaves town to pursue his dreams. As the player begins their styling work, the player will encounter several customers who are aspiring to become idols. Each notable customer will have a storyline that plays out as the player assists them on their way to fame.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay remains consistent with the other games, with the player managing their boutique and catering to customers' unique brand and image preferences. Like Trendsetters, Styling Star functions on an in-game day and night cycle as opposed to real time. The additional option of being a hairstylist and make-up artist to your customers makes a return from Fashion Forward, as you help out neighboring salon owners. Menswear styling is also present, though the player cannot sell menswear items directly from their shop and instead assists customers at a specialized boutique.

Hearts replace the stamp card feature from the first two games, instead showing the strength of your relationship to the customer.

The in-game cellphone is expanded, allowing for the player to design custom items, including both a bag for their boutique and individual items of clothing, as well as message customers they have a strong relationship with and ask them to meet at the boutique, Hair Salon, or Beautician for re-styling. The phone is also where the player accesses the online features of the game, where they can upload their own custom designs and buy custom designs from other players.

Styling Star, with its central theme of idols, also allows the player to take on styling jobs for NIN10 Productions. At the Agency, players can style one of their aspiring idol customers for things like advertisements, events, etc. for a larger paycheck.

Trivia[]

  • According to a Game Informer article from 2019, a possible new Style Savvy entry was among several 3DS games that were cancelled mid-development following the failure of a bigger title Nintendo game.
    • The article also mentioned interest in reviving these cancelled projects for the Nintendo Switch, which was later supported by a reporter from the Wall Street Journal, as well as Nintendo filing multiple trademarks for the franchise in 2020.
  • Styling Star is the first and only entry to not include fashion contests.
  • Styling Star is also the first game to completely remove the Sporty image from the game. Items from the brand Streetflow in Fashion Forward were moved under other brands.
  • Styling Star is the sole game to not receive a physical release in the North America region, only being available via Nintendo eShop. As of March 2023, the NA version is unobtainable due to the closure of the eShop.
